Mission Statement

The Helen I. Smith School PTO is a nonprofit parent teacher organization (PTO) whose mission is to establish and nurture a close relationship between the parents, teachers, and students by advancing opportunities in the home, school, and community of the Helen I. Smith School. The PTO sponsors assistance to teachers in classroom settings, raises funds for supplemental educational materials and experiences, supports school and family social interaction, and provides a non-biased forum for sharing information on issues that impact our children. It is our belief that the team effort of a parent teacher organization offers the best possible learning environment for our children.

Our mission is to align resources with the vision and direction of the school to enrich the learning environment while empowering parents, teachers and students for success. Our desire as a PTO is to exemplify integrity, teamwork and community while fostering productive, healthy partnerships with school teachers and administration staff. We will conduct ourselves with humble, positive attitudes as we create and maintain relationships honorably and professionally within the school. The PTO is committed to students, parents and teachers and will represent itself in a respectful manner at all times.

Welcome Message from Principal Eckel

Dear Smith Community,

Happy Fall Everyone! It is a pleasure to be part of the Smith School family! It has been a busy first few weeks getting to know the students, faculty and staff. I look forward to getting to know more of the parents as the year moves on.

We are continuing with the goals that were put into place last year regarding increasing Language Arts proficiency for students in all grades. Our teachers are working with the Writer's Workshop model and students are excited about their writing. It has been a pleasure to go into classrooms and see the enthusiasm of our students as they become budding authors! The faculty takes the goal of setting high expectations and achievement for all students very seriously. They work tirelessly to help each child reach their potential, but we can't do it alone. For students to be successful, we need to have a strong partnership between parents, teachers and students. When all three come together, great things can happen!

It is an honor to be your principal for this year, and I look forward to our partnership!

Sincerely,
Pat Eckel
